Some brides will max out multiple credit cards to purchase their dream dress. But in this economy, no one should be taking such manic measures. You don't need to take out a second mortgage on your home to look like a million bucks on the big day!
These five tips will save you big bucks on The Dress. It may take a few extra shopping trips, but what's the problem with that? The hunt will give you extra bonding time with your bridesmaids, mother, and FMIL.
1. Custom-made - That's right! You may think customizing your wedding gown would cost a fortune but if you find an experienced seamstress (with at least four excellent references) you might be pleasantly surprised by her price. Take a photo of what you want and brainstorm ways to save with things like fabric choices.
NOTE: Make sure to ask for photos of dresses they've made before.
2. Sample Sales - There is a reason why teams of girls in matching t-shirts run through stores like cavemen. You can save up to 70% on designer gowns! What are you waiting for? Gather your sample sale team, hand out whistles and matching color tee's along with photos of gowns you love and go for the gold!
NOTE: Have someone bring along a full-length mirror. Often these sales are held in large open spaces with no mirrors.
3. eBay or Craigslist- We've all heard stories or know a girl who fell in love with The Dress after she already ordered The Dress. Yup, it happens all the time. (This is why you must STOP dress shopping after you place an order, lol) What do you think these girls do with first dress? They sell it! Shop around and you could find a hidden gem.
4. Vintage and Consignment Stores - Everyone loves a great deal and a good find so why not just take a peak in some of your local vintage and/or consignment stores. A close friend found a gorgeous designer gown at a secondhand bridal shop. She would have never been able to afford the gown full price and now she will walk down the aisle high-priced style. And remember, most of the dresses you will find have only been worn once!
NOTE: Stores like The Bridal Garden in NYC are the best of both worlds. Your discounted gown purchase also helps your philanthropy efforts.
5. Rent - Hey, why not? The groom and his boys get to enjoy the rental price tag. You can, too. This is a recent trend that has been gaining ground in a big way. I would keep my eye on sites that seem to be breaking into the bridal world like Rent The Runway. It's only a matter of time before they take to full plunge.
Finding your dream dress through one of these avenues may take a bit more time and energy but will do wonders for your wallet. Even with the price of alterations (and cleaning, if necessary) you will still save a ton!
Take all that extra cash and tack on an extra day to your honeymoon! :)
